What is Meningococcal disease?

Meningitis is a condition in which a virus or bacteria causes the tissue around the brain and spinal cord get inflamed, which can be very painful and cause seizures. The most common symptoms are fever, neck stiffness, and headache. Meningitis is spread by coughing, sneezing, and kissing. A serious infection can lead to brain damage.

Who should get vaccinated for meningitis?

Meningitis can affect anyone, but it is most common in infants less than 12 months old and individuals 16-21 years of age. Because children and young adults are among the groups at highest risk of contracting this potentially deadly disease, many states require vaccinations for school and college students. According to the CDC, the following are people at increased risk for meningitis who should get vaccinated:

  • College freshman living in dormitories
  • Laboratory personnel who are routinely exposed to meningococcal bacteria
  • U.S.military recruits
  • Anyone traveling to, or living in, a part of the world where meningococcal disease is common, such as parts of Africa
  • Anyone who has a damaged spleen, or whose spleen has been removed
  • Anyone who has an immune system disorder
